The Municipality of Gorna Oryahovitsa is located in Central Northern Bulgaria, situated among the picturesque northern foothills of Arbanasska Bardo, on the border between the Fore-Balkan and the Danube Plain. The heights around the city are cut from the Yantra river gorge. It is the second largest economic center in the region of Veliko Tarnovo. History
In the III - IV century the fortress, which in the Middle Ages was named "Ryahovets" was built. Its name derives from the plant species walnut, which is widespread in the area. Ryahovets fortress is built to protect the road that starts from the Roman city of Nikopolis ad Istrum - (located 14 km north of today's Gorna Oryahovitsa) to Augusta Trayana (Stara Zagora). After the arrival of the Slavs and the Proto-Bulgarians and the formation of the Bulgarian state in the area of the fortress a settlement emerged.
In the 12th - 14th centuries it emerged as an important defense bastion for the protection of the capital of the Bulgarian Kingdom - Turnovgrad, located only 6 km away.
The fortress "Ryahovets" became one of the big medieval cities - fortresses, existing in the Bulgarian state. Commemorated and destroyed during the 2nd Crusade by Vladislav III Yagelo in 1444.
