Bulgaria is situated in Southeast Europe and occupies the eastern part of the Balkan Peninsula. The country's territory is 111 000 sq. km. The capital of Bulgaria is the city of Sofia. 86.6% of the country's population is Eastern Orthodox and about 13% are Muslims. Bulgaria is a country of political and social stability and enjoys absolute ethnical tolerance. Since 1989 when communist domination ended a continuous process of transformation toward political democracy and a market economy has began in Bulgaria. The country officially became a member of NATO on 02.04.2004. Due to the efforts of the Bulgarian government and the whole society Bulgaria joined the EU in January 2007. All this lead to constant annual economic growth and market liberalization.
