The town of Berkovitsa has not more than 16 000 inhabitants. It is located at 400 meters above the sea level, at the northern parts of the foot of the Berkovitza mountains. It is located 89 km north from Sofia, 24 km south of Montana and 25 km north of Petrochan.
The town of Berkovitsa is an old settlement. This is proved from the fortress and church remains from the IV century found on the Kaleto hill, located north of the town.
The town is popular from the Tzar Kaloyan’s reign ( beginning of IVX century). For the first time the name of the town is mentioned in a written Turkish document from1491 year . During the Turkish yolk it is developed as a craft center mainly for producing pottery . A lot of refugees from all over Bulgaria has settled here during this period. Local people have many times opposed to the Turkish Yolk.
After the Liberation the town starts falling because it is left away from the main railway which passes through the Iskar gorge and because of that the market for the pottery is lost. The famous Bulgarian writer Ivan Vasov has worked in Berkovitza as a chairman of the court.
The nature is being extremely generous to Berkovitsa! Veneravle chestnut-trees, beech and oak forests cover the mountain. From the sweet-scented raspberries, which are in great quantities in the region wines and juices are being prepared as well as the famous berkovska rakia!
The region is unique with its climate and balneological facts. The winter is cold and the summer is fresh and breezy.
Mineral springs in Vyrshetz, Spanchevtzi, Byrzia, Slatina , Zamfirovo and Borovtzi are wealth that will be used in the future!
Besides all that Berkovitsa has at its disposal number of interesting spots that preserve history from centuries.
